The Society exists principally to bring Scottish-based lute and early guitar players together to play to and with each other. All standards from complete beginner to professional will be encouraged to take part. This is a ‘safe place’ to try out that new piece you have been working on, ask questions, share info, etc.

SLEGS is society for the history and construction of, and performance upon early* plucked musical instruments, primarily the lute and the early guitar, of music composed for these instruments and the techniques used to play them.
*’early’ in this context ranges from the earliest times up until the middle of the 20th century.

Future meetings will include presentations, workshops and concerts. But the main aim is to get players together.
Interested in joining? All you have to do is turn up. Look out for the date of the next meeting – it will be on the main page.

I have a five course lute and want to know where to find music for it. I play many stringed instruments, including the ukulele, that is how i found you. I am a classical guitarist so am comfortable with finger style playing. A five-course lute is a medieval lute, often played with a quill. Either you have a copy of an instrument in a painting, or you might have a modern oud or ud from the Middle East, which is more likely. There is almost no surviving music specifically for the medieval lute, so you have to be creative in adapting known medieval tunes.

I moved to Fife just over two years ago. I’m a member of The Lute Society and have a 6 course renaissance lute, which – for various reasons, I haven’t played for 5 years now. However, I intend to start again and am very interested in meeting other people interested in early music.

Hi Inger. It’s good to have another lute player around. As you’ll read in the latest post, I have given up the reins of the Society. The new management team will be making another website soon.
